Academic Support

The Woolley Center

The Harold Woolley Adult Education Center offers programs to help students become college and career ready. The center serves learners who are working towards obtaining their GED® certificate, learners who are reviewing academic skills, and English language learners. Students in all programs are eligible for assistance with transitioning to college or the workplace. Students can attend classes tailored to their needs, participate in guided study, or take classes online with assistance from qualified instructors.

The Woolley Center offers morning, afternoon, and evening classes in Roseburg and Tri-City. For more information about attending the Woolley Center or to sign up for orientation, call 541-440-4603 or by email at woolley@umpqua.edu

High School Equivalency (GED®)

Oregon's High School Equivalency Program, administered by the HECC Office of Community Colleges and Workforce Development (CCWD) oversees the GED® test preparation, instruction, and testing process in Oregon. To obtain it, one must pass a series of four tests, and maintain a minimum average score on all tests. The tests cover math, science, social studies, and language arts.

Students who complete the GED® certificate and at least sixty hours of class instruction may qualify for a tuition waiver for up to twelve college credits at UCC. This tuition waiver must be used within a calendar year following completion of the final GED® subject test.

Umpqua Community College is the official GED® Testing Center for Douglas County. Tests are given each week in the Educational Support Building (ESB) on the main campus. Appointments for GED® testing are made at https://ged.com/.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The Woolley Center offers classes for English language learners at various levels. There are evening and online classes available. Classes cover conversation and pronunciation, with emphasis on work and life skills.

Skills Review

For adults who would like to review their reading, writing, or math skills, the Woolley Center offers skills review classes at both the Roseburg and Tri-City locations. Students receive individual attention and instruction on the subject of their choice.

Learning Skills Center

At UCC, our cohorts co-enroll students into several classes together and include integrated curricula, collaboration among instructors, as well as enhanced mentoring and tutoring which are embedded into the program. Students in these cohorts enhance their reading, writing, and study skills. Students are recommended to the program based on their placement test scores.

Objectives of the LSC

Students are grouped in small cohorts and enroll in courses of Reading, Writing, a College Success course, and a Critical Thinking course. Students have the option to enroll in one additional class. This is designed to:

  • Help students advance through college-level courses within a structure of cohort accountability
  • Academically and socially integrate students within the formal and informal systems of UCC

Benefits of the Cohorts to Students

  • Raises levels of academic and social achievement
  • Decreases student marginality and increases mattering
  • Provides opportunities for deeper, more meaningful, and connected learning
  • Creates a practice ground for skill development within a meaningful context
  • Improves critical thinking, functioning in a group, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Prepares students for work environments during college and after graduation
